Lake Mohave
General Windsurfing Info

(This information has been accumulated from various messages in the newsgroups*. If you have other info you wish to share, please send via the feedback link)

Location:
Lake Mohave is located on the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada, north of Laughlin, NV and Bullhead City, AZ. It is the southern part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Sailing Conditions:

  • Best winds usually run Dec-Feb.
  • South winds are front driven and can develop fairly strong at 6 Mile cove
(Northwest side of the lake near the town of Searchlight)
  • North winds are driven by high pressure over the 4 corners area and a good at
Kathrine's landing. (South end of the lake)
  • Kathrine's is actually the the boat launch. Cabin site cove (another couple of
miles north) is the windsurfing launch."

"I've seen it blow really hard down there, but it's more typically 6.5 to 5.5."

"The sailing can be great at both Cabin Site Point on the Arizona side and 6Mile Cove on the Nevada side. These 2 places are about 50 driving miles apart from each other. If you like camp grounds with showers etc and awesome Laughlin buffets close by you'll want to stay at Katherine's Landing on the Arizona side. If you like primitive camping and can take everything you need for days, including water, go the 6Mile Cove and camp there."

"Cabin Site point seems to work the best for North winds and 6 Mile Cove for South winds. Kiters prefer 6 Mile because it has a nice sandy beach area for rigging and launching and long long reach to the other side. We stay at Katherine's Landing and just drive to either beach depending on the wind direction for the day. The drive to 6 Mile is a major WASH BOARD kind of a road. I recommend more than 35MPH, that's what it takes for our Ford Van to "Plane" over the bumps and makes it a speedy trip. And you can stay in the Casino Hotels in Laughlin for a reasonable rate, but get a reservation for sure."

"There's also a killer semi primitive launch on the Arizona side across from 6 Mile cove. Very uncrowded (because it;'s a long way from any where)."

"We've also launched out of Cottonwood Cove (about 2 miles North of 6 Mile on thr
Nevada side), but it's a major improved boat launch and camping facility (not my style). Easy to find
though."

Directions:

"To get to Cabin Site cove, go to the Katherines Landing campsite. As
you enter the road that heads down to the facilities (boat ramp,
marina, cafe, condos) take a right that looks like it heads off into
the desert. This road will take you along the lakes edge next to
private homes and summer homes.. Just follow this road to the end and
you will hit a gravel road that takes you right to cabin site.."

"Cabin Site is actually the 2nd road you see on the map that leads to the water.
The first leads down a dirt road to a very wind sheltered primitive launch, you don't want that one."

"Take the right just before you enter Kathrine's Landing (you'll have to pay the
$5 entrance fee at the outside gate), there should be a sign that looks something like "Cabin Site Cove". Follow the paved road a couple of miles through some twisty turns until you come to actual residential housing, and take the first left around the dirt loop. At the bottom of the loop (towards the lake) is an outlet. Take the dirt road to the water, and rig on the rocks."
